How To Teach Your Team To Be Safe Drivers

Commercial Driver Training

When you have a team of professional drivers, it is always essential to keep them on their toes. You want to be sure they are doing everything they can to reduce risks to your entity. One way they can do that is by maintaining a clean driving record.

There are several things you can do to ensure your drivers are safe. Here's where to start.

Take The Pressure Off The Timeline

Whenever possible, pull back from paying drivers based on arrival times or miles traveled per day. This increases the risk of accidents, speeding, and other reckless driving behaviors. Instead, industry trends are moving towards paying per load or a set rate. By adopting this model, you take some of that pressure off your drivers. You can alleviate some of the stress they feel to speed up.

Encourage Defensive Driving Courses

No matter if you have a fleet of passenger vehicles or large semis, the goal is to ensure your drivers do not cause an accident. A defensive driving course or advanced driving course can help with this. These programs help to support individuals by providing a better ability to avoid other drivers. They can also teach your drivers how to spot others that are speeding or being reckless. The goal here is to teach them skills to manage their behavior to overcome the limits of others.

Hold A Routine Seminar Or Training Program

Some companies value driver safety so much, they teach drivers about safety on the road. Consider a few meetings focused on helping drivers to focus on such things as:

  • Distracted driving risks and how to avoid them
  • Driving under the influence, which includes not just alcohol but medications and illicit drugs
  • Avoiding fatigue behind the wheel

Take the time to find out what type of losses you suffered over the last few years. You can use your commercial auto insurance data to help you. Do any of your drivers struggle with speeding? Perhaps a few have violations stemming from the new Electronic Logging Device requirements. Incorporate a training program on those topics.

By investing the time in teaching your drivers how to remain safe, you show them how valuable you believe risk-free driving is. This also helps minimize the risk of your auto insurance costs rising.
